This is mainly a place for me to say my stuff about what I want to do but you may just be looking for my maps (click here)..
I got started in APRS as a possable solution to a problem we had with the STPR off road rallye. They had tons of things going on all over the place. We had people like the race doctor and we needed to know where they were and/or how to get in touch with them. We also needed to keep track of the 20 or thirty hams involved. Some of which were mobile sweeps. My first couple of times at net control showed me that this was utter chaos. Paper everywhere and the most important stuff needed to be passed to other net controls or race managers. We even had a ham lost in the woods after the race ended at 4am because people could not keep track of things in real time on paper and forgot he was out there. APRS was looked at because I read about its use in other types of races. GPS was not the most important issue but turns out to be a handy instant locator. We needed a good map so take a look in my Maps directory. Our first attempt was full of problems. We had a hard time making a connection in the mountains on 440mhz the first year so it was mostly a wash. The testing was done before the leaves came out and the race occurs on the first weekend in June. What it allowed me to do though is simulate (and capture) the activity I wanted to use it for. This told us lots about the need for good icons and how to pass this info to the other areas. It also gave us a somewhat secure method to pass info between net controls without interupting the limited 2 meter frequencies. The second year proved to be a tremendous success, at least for us. The radio leader for the race is very much for this activity and wants us to push ahead but now we have a new problem. Where to get the APRS operators ? We are short hams much less hams that can work a computer and APRS. If you can or want to help contact myself (KE3HT/m) or Phil (KA3VRW).
